Keep what gives
the house its soul.
Character renovation is not about freezing a home in time. It is about knowing which parts deserve to stay — and where a confident new intervention can make everyday life significantly better.
Read the house before you redraw it.
Older Perth homes often contain the things people are trying to buy back into new construction: proportion, timber, texture, deep verandahs and rooms with a real sense of place.
The job is not to preserve everything. It is to separate what gives the home identity from what is simply outdated, inefficient or no longer useful.
The front can stay familiar while the home changes completely.
This project is a good example of the philosophy: retain the character and street presence, then allow the new work to solve the way the family actually wants to live.

After · character retainedThe strongest character projects often feel restrained from the street and transformative once you move through the house.

Character lives in the details, not the age of the building.
We look for the elements that give the home its identity and are worth carrying forward. Sometimes that means restoration. Sometimes it means repairing, matching or simply leaving a good original detail alone.
Not everything old is precious. But you need to know the difference.
The Scarborough renovation began with a run-down heritage home that required structural upgrades as well as a completely better way of living. These are not glamour shots — and that is the point. Good renovation starts by understanding what you actually have.

Keep the value. Original timber, good proportions and heritage character can be worth protecting even when the surrounding rooms need extensive work.
Remove the compromise. Poor planning, tired cabinetry, inadequate services and structural problems do not become valuable merely because they are old.
The rear of the house is often where you can be bolder.
Once the character rooms are understood, the extension can respond to a different brief: natural light, larger openings, modern services, better circulation and a much stronger relationship with the backyard.
Existing rear · Mount Hawthorn
Completed extension · Mount HawthornThe new work does not need to imitate the original home. It needs to sit comfortably beside it and feel intentional.
That distinction allows the front of the house to retain its identity while the rear becomes lighter, more open and much better suited to modern family life.

Preservation only works if the new structure is properly resolved.
Character work can involve more unknowns than a clean new build: existing footings, old walls, roof geometry, floor levels and services all have to be understood before the new and old can be tied together properly.
That technical work should largely disappear when the project is finished. What the client should feel is that the house now makes sense.
The structural and lightweight-construction detail belongs on our dedicated Timber & Lightweight page. Here, it matters only because it allows the character home to remain the hero.
Start with the house you already have.
